Accessibility of urban transport spaces for families: A case study of Poznań based on universal design principles

Patrycja Reder , Iwona Jankowiak

Abstract

The aim of the article is to assess the accessibility of communication space for parents with young children using baby strollers, based on the example of Poznań, and to identify the main barriers and solutions supporting the mobility of this user group. The scope of the study included an analysis of three types of urban structures differing in the period of their development: the historic part of the city, housing estates from the 1970s, and contemporary residential developments. The evaluation covered infrastructure elements crucial for the everyday functioning of caregivers of small children, including pedestrian routes, pedestrian crossings, public transport stops, accessibility of recreational areas, and methods of overcoming differences in terrain elevation. The analyses were complemented by a survey conducted among 139 users of urban communication space. The results indicate that the highest level of accessibility is characteristic of new housing estates, while the greatest limitations occur in the historic part of the city. The most frequently identified problems include the very limited presence of benches equipped with changing tables and the rare availability of solutions enabling easy avoidance of stairs. The conclusions show that, despite gradual improvements in the quality of urban space, none of the analysed areas provides fully comfortable conditions for moving with a baby stroller, indicating the need for further modernisation and design measures.
